The plan was to follow-up with the Back family - whose birth shoot I’d done in early March - and get more shots of baby Camryn, now a few weeks older. And I did that, I really did.

But also, this happened:

It started out innocently enough: it was finally warm and sunny after a week of nasty spring weather so mom and dad decided to get out the sprinkler for the kids. What began as a simple romp through the water…

…quickly turned into a mud battle of epic proportions.

And there was no WAY I was missing it.

This is what makes documentary family photography so compelling: the lack of structure and planning means that I'm always open and ready to capture anything and everything that unfolds, whether clean...

...or fantastically filthy.
