As Erin Back writhed in agony and begged for someone – anyone – to make the anesthesiologist hurry up before it was too late, the look on the nurse’s face told me what I had already suspected:
...that Erin would most likely be having this baby without an epidural.
And she did it.
Her ability to power through the pain as the agonizing back labor hit her with blow after blow left me completely awe-struck. I cannot even begin to imagine what she went through.
But it was worth it.
The daddy, Curtis, was a model husband, providing Erin with exactly what she needed when she needed it – at times comic relief and at others quiet strength.
Their other children, Van and Kyli, had been noticeably anxious all day, unsure about what was happening to mama and why. But when they finally got to meet their new sister, their excitement could barely be contained.
After the kids had a chance to meet their sister the rest of the family came in to welcome baby Camryn Jean to the world. The first to snatch up new baby Back was, of course, Grandma Helen.
After everyone had a chance to hold the baby, they made a quick FaceTime call with family who hadn’t been able to make it in person and then it was time to let mommy, daddy, and baby have some alone time and get some rest. I cannot thank the Back Family enough for letting me be a part of this day. It was pure magic.
